The Grand Cinema, a nonprofit dedicated to film and film education in Pierce County, has launched a campaign to raise $5 million to purchase the building it has called home for over 26 years. Founded in 1997, The Grand Cinema has been a hub for film-related activities, including hosting the Tacoma Film Festival and film camps for youth. The purchase of the Merlino Arts Center, which houses The Grand and other organizations like the Tacoma City Ballet and Corina Bakery, has garnered support from its fellow tenants. This move not only secures a permanent home for The Grand Cinema but also provides a new source of income, estimated at $200,000-250,000 annually, to be reinvested in the community. While the idea to buy the building is not new, The Grand Cinema has made significant progress towards its goal and has exclusive bidding rights until June 2025. This initiative aims to preserve not only The Grand Cinema but also the cultural richness it brings to the Tacoma community.
